I am sending this to all who have inquired about coming to Crisfield, those who have already served here, and those who are on the calendar and are still anticipating the trip.

This is a video I created and we just showed it publicly for the first time at our Pen-Del Annual Conference last week.   It is heartfelt to me and has been so to others also, so I thought I would share it with you as well.  The link is below.  

 For those who have already been here, this will be a reflection of the work you have done and a reminder of the impact you have already made on lives here in this little community.

For those who are yet to come,  you can see that there is still a great need here.  We are committed to at least 2 years but will not leave until the last family is back in a safe home.

For those planning trips, this may help to motivate people to want to be part of this wonderful outreach of Christian presence.

For those who cannot come, you might use it as a means of inspiring a campaign to help with funding this immense project.

I trust that however you use the film, the result will be to God's glory, as it is Him we are representing in this mission field.

ERT NEWS FROM OKLAHOMA; TEAMS NEEDED IN URUGUAY; PASSING OF MADAME DEPESTRE; FLOODS AND FIRES IN CO, TX, & MEXICO; RECOVERY TRAINING; UMCOR JOB OPENING

ERT TEAM FROM CAL PAC TO OKLAHOMA 

An Early Response Team (ERT) from Southern California left a week ago to go and serve in Oklahoma and surrounding areas until June 28th.  In addition to their team they also had a trailor of tools and other items that will aid in their service! Volunteers Needed for Team to Uruguay

September 28-October 6. The team will be focusing on the Friendship House and Church in Montevideo. This is a special needs school for teens and older adults. They will be painting, installing tile on the floors and ceiling and other work around the school and church. If you would like more information, please contact Rev. STRONG MISSIONS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER TEAMS

Strong Missions, an Advance with the UMC and listed on the UMVIM project listing, still has plenty of room for individuals and teams this year-especially in the fall and early winter months, as well into next year. We really need help to complete the project list for this year. We're working in two churches building space to feed and educate children. Also, for those with a green thumb, you'll have the opportunity to dig your hands into some of the most fertile soil in the world. We need help preparing the new garden that will directly provide food for the children's feeding programs, and you'll also be able to visit such programs during your trip with us. There are also some home improvement jobs to get to if we have enough teams sign up. We need you! UMCOR RESPONDS TO FLOODS AND FIRES IN COLORADO, TEXAS, AND MEXICO

UMCOR is providing the Rocky Mountain Annual Conference with emergency assistance to respond to the Black Forest Fire which charred hundreds of homes and acreage. Rocky Mountain will use funding to work with families affected by the fires near Colorado Springs. 

The Black Forest Fire, just recently contained, blazed through 16,000 acres, destroyed nearly 500 homes and claimed two lives, according to news reports. UMCOR’s US Disaster Response Executive, Gregg Forrester is in communication with Gary Haddock, disaster relief coordinator for the Rocky Mountain Conference, to assess future needs and support. 

UMCOR is also responding to recent flooding in Texas with two emergency grants to the Southwest Texas Annual Conference. The grants will aid affected communities in the San Antonio area and residents affected by flooding in Eagle Pass.

In San Antonio, floodwaters deluged numerous roads, killed two women, and forced more than 235 rescues by emergency workers. Nearly 10 inches of rainfall was reported in a matter of hours by the city airport.

Piedras Negras, Mexico, a border town located three hours west of San Antonio, also was affected by flooding. UMCOR is in talks with Bishop Raul García, Eastern Conference of the Methodist Church of Mexico, to secure assistance there.

PASSING OF MADAME DEPESTRE

UMCOR extends its deepest condolences to families and loved ones of Madame Anne Ruth Depestre, who passed away on Friday, June 21. Madame Depestre was the manager of the Methodist Guesthouse in Petionville, Haiti, and wife of Rev. Marco Depestre of the Methodist Church in Haiti (Eglise Méthodiste d'Haïti). The Rev. Jim Gulley, UMCOR consultant, is attending Madame Depestre’s memorial service in Haiti this week on behalf of UMCOR and Global Ministries. 

As manager of the Methodist guesthouse, Madame Depestre was central in facilitating arriving volunteer groups or visiting staff who were coordinating or implementing recovery efforts in Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake. You are welcome to sign the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission online guest book to share your condolences.

LONG TERM RECOVERY BASICS TRAINING 

On July 9-10, at 2 p.m. EST, the Emergency Response Specialists of Church World Service will present Long Term Recovery Basics. This series will cover a wide range of topics designed to help you and your community rebuild and recover after a disaster. This presentation is in response to requests from those who have been affected by recent summer storms.

Each webinar session will be approximately 75 minutes long, with a 15-minute break between sessions.

HELLO AND FAREWELL TO UMVIM WJ CONFERENCE COORDINATORS

 

 

 

Our UMVIM WJ Conference Coordinators help to make UMVIM here in the Western Jurisdiction possible.  They are a key part and sometimes the only part of the infrastructure that allows churches and individuals the tools to serve as short-term volunteers through the UMC.  This connection extends around the country and the world at hundreds of service opportunties.

 

 

Bev and Scott Pressman have been the UMVIM Conference Coordinators for Oregon-Idaho Conference and done an amazing job.  Likewise, Kent Heltne was Co-Coordinator for the Desert Southwest Conference and was instrumental in helping lead and support many UMVIM teams to and from the Desert Southwest Conference.  Sandra Pahlke in the Alaska UMC Conference was also a strong support on behalf of UMVIM WJ during her short time serving as the Conference Coordinator for Alaska. All four of these individuals will be leaving their posts as UMVIM Conference Coordinators as they move on to other areas where God has called them.

 

 

As such, I wanted to extend my great apprecation to Scott, Bev, Kent, and Sandra.  We will miss you but know that your service is not ending but only changing.  May God continue to use each of you in mighty ways.

 

 

At the same time, we want to welcome Bill Sanford.  He will be the new UMVIM Conference Co-Coordinator and will be working with Chris Spencer on behalf of Desert Southwest Conference.  Actually, we are welcoming him back as he served as UMVIM Conference Coordinator for Desert Southwest for a number of years before.  It is good to have him return to add his wealth of experience and skills to UMVIM WJ.  We also welcome Jennifer Gutierrez as the UMVIM Conference Coordinator for Cal-Pac Conference!!

A conference-wide medical mission team is being planned to the Amazon River in the spring of 2014. The team will work for one week on the Methodist mission boat at Manaus, Brazil. The group of 10-12 volunteers needs at least one physician, one dentist, one dental assistant as well as nurses and non-medical personnel. They have 5 sites that are hosting teams. Team members must be at least 18 years of age due to local governmental restrictions. Case management

training just took place this past week so that the process of identifying clients for the rebuilding can begin.  The delay of government funding, Winter, code regulations, rebuilding guidelines, and Union opposition has led to many challenges. The conference staff is trying to increase capacity for teams and the corresponding hosting but it will take time. Please don't try and challenge the age rule - it is not negotiable.

 



ROMA UMVIM MISSION EXPERIENCE; HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF-TEAMS WANTED IN MARYLAND; TEAMS NEEDING VOLUNTEERS

ROMA UMVIM MISSION EXPERIENCE

For the next two years, the UMW/GBGM geographic study emphasis for Mission u (formerly called School of Mission) is The Roma of Europe. Almost everyone I’ve told about our upcoming trip to Eastern Europe and the study of the Roma has a negative story to share about “gypsies” – either from their own experience or a friend’s. I’m pondering my own attitude – how do I react to a culture and value system that is so different from mine. How do I hold on to my belief that each person is a beloved child of God, no matter how different that person is from me?

Purpose

The purpose of this seminar trip is to gather information about the single largest minority group in Europe, the Roma, often called “gypsies”. People in other ethnic groups have seen the Roma as thieves, beggars, and fortune tellers. Their women have been involuntarily sterilized and their children forcibly removed from them “for the children’s own good.” Up to two and a half million of them were exterminated during Hitler’s reign of terror.

Travel of 14-16 days … April 18-May 8

3 countries (could stretch to 4) – Serbia, Bulgaria, Slovakia

Simple accommodations – in church guest rooms if the space is available and inexpensive hotels.

We will connect with as many projects and people as possible to give us a sense of the Roma culture and situation in different countries and settings – through In Mission Together, Church World Service, those involved with women’s ministries.

§ A price of $3500 will cover airfare, train fair, in-country transportation, room and board, translators, insurance.



Expect to set dates week of Feb 18. Preliminary payment of $100 due March 1. Final payment of $3400 due April 1. If trip costs are less, money will be refunded at the end of the trip.

We will probably fly in to Vienna (Austria).

INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEERS & TRAINING

 

Would you like to serve as a volunteer for 2 months to 2 years either as an individual or a couple?  You can through the Individual Volunteer Program!  There are sites around the country and the world that need such volunteers to serve in a variety of posts!  If you are interested please contact Nancy Eubanks and/or Malcolm Frazier at Global Ministries.  Nancy's email is nteubanks@gmail.com and Malcom's is mfrazier@umcmission.org.

Apply to be a Global Justice Volunteer

Young adults are encouraged to apply for this short term international mission program. The application deadline is March 1.
The Global Justice Volunteer program gives young adults 10 weeks of hands-on mission experience. Applications, now available online, are due March 1.
Applicants should be 18-30 years old and ready to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God.” As the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries facilitates mission from everywhere to everywhere, candidates from around the world are encouraged to apply and participate.
Florence Lassayo of Sierra Leone served as a Global Justice Volunteer in Kenya in 2011. She worked with women living with AIDS.
Encouraging young people to consider mission service, she says, “We have the energy. We are strong. We can make change. We can be very influential. If young people are standing for the entire people, we will see that there is progress, because we are the backbone of development.”
The Global Justice Volunteers program differs from the Mission Intern and US-2 programs in two important ways:

• It requires only a 10-week commitment.
• Participants are asked to fundraise. The amount of fundraising required is flexible, and the program staff is committed to ensuring this is not a barrier to the entry to any applicant.

The 2013 class of Global Justice Volunteers will attend orientation from June 8-15 and serve from June 15 through Aug. 11.
